Library Assistant-Part-time

 

Job Objective:

 

This position requires a thorough knowledge of library policies and procedures, layout of the library, and circulation procedures. He/she must display the ability to interact with staff and public in a cooperative and courteous manner.  

 

Essential Duties, Tasks & Accountabilities

Working with the Supervisor

 

  • To inform the supervisor of problems and to offer solutions.

  • To cooperate with all staff to ensure a harmony of purpose for the smooth functioning of the library.

  • To strive for accuracy, thoroughness, and neatness in accomplishing tasks.

Working with the Public

 

  • To loan materials according to Front Desk procedures.

  • To navigate competently through SPARK and all its circulation functions.

  • To demonstrate courtesy and friendliness, using tact and diplomacy, with patrons and staff.

  • To welcome new patrons and give information about the library, including circulation policies and procedures.

  • To register new users, issue new cards, and renew old registrations.

  • To check in and process all newspapers. 

  • To assist patrons in taking card of overdue or lost materials.

  • To use the credit-card machine, telephone system, cash register, fax, and photocopiers with competence.

  • To assist in other Front Desk duties as needed – putting carts in order, folding and collating, shelving, filing, sorting, or other tasks.

 

Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of library procedures and policies.

  • Basic knowledge of library equipment (computers, cash register, fax, photocopiers).

  • Ability to interact pleasantly and effectively with people.

  • Ability to use computers.

  • High-school diploma (or equivalent mastery).

  • College degree or experience an asset.

  • Must be able to work well with the public.

 

Job Hours: Must be available to work evenings and weekends.

Starting Wage: $12/hour. No benefits. All library positions require a PA state criminal background check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance and a FBI fingerprint-based federal criminal history background check.

Page (Shelver) Part-Time

 

Job Objective

 

This position requires a thorough knowledge of the layout of the library, an understanding of the alphabet and Dewey Decimal System, as well as an attention to detail. He/she must be able to keep library materials in order and in their proper location, in addition to assisting patrons in finding items.

 

Essential Duties, Tasks, and Accountabilities:

 

Working with the Supervisor

 

  • To inform the supervisor of problems and to offer solutions

  • To cooperate with all staff to ensure a harmony of purpose for the smooth functioning of the library

  • To strive for accuracy, thoroughness, and neatness in accomplishing tasks

Working with the Public

  • To handle incoming library materials

  • To empty and monitor return bins

  • To use a computer to check materials in

  • To organize items on carts to prepare them for shelving

  • To shelve items in their correct locations

  • To maintain clean appearance of public areas by reshelving items and replacing furniture

  • To raise/lower flag in front of building

  • To assist patrons in finding items, or working with staff to assist patrons

  • To assist in other Front Desk/Circulation duties as needed – folding and collating, filing, sorting, or other tasks

 

Qualifications

Reference (Part-Time)


Job Objective

The Part-time Reference Librarian is responsible for providing reference services and for assisting in the performance of all necessary tasks to ensure that Indian Valley Public Library patrons receive excellent service.


Essential Duties, Tasks & Accountabilities

• Provides reference services to the public, including answering reference questions, reader’s advisory, and technology assistance.

• Provides basic troubleshooting of equipment such as computers, mobile devices, printers, copy machines, scanners; assists library users with the internet, email, MS Office suite and other software packages.

• During evening and weekend shifts, this position serves as the Person in Charge and as such is responsible closing the library and addressing any issues that arise during the shift.

 

Qualifications

• Supervisory experience preferred

• Experience working in libraries and with library reference materials, including print and electronic resources

• Excellent computer skills; experience with MS Office Products

• Strong verbal and written communication skills

• Ability to work independently

• MLS degree from an ALA accredited library school, or currently enrolled in a MLS program

 

Job Hours: Must be available to work evenings and weekends.
