June 2012
Director's Corner

Special thanks to the Clemens Food Group and to Univest for sponsoring our summer program for children this year.   We look forward to a summer filled with dozens of programs for preschoolers, kids, and teens - all free, fun, intriguing, creative, and dream-filled.

Welcome to the library's new administrative assistant, Tanya Fischer, who brings a strong background in graphic design, art, and office expertise to the library.   Feel free to stop in and say hi.

For adults, IVPL once again has a no-pressure/ no-fuss/ no-meetings summer reading club. Just read books, submit a short form with your review - and you'll be eligible for our weekly prize drawing.

Film groups, book discussions, genealogy workshops, and the popular "B" Movies series continue throughout the summer.

It is never too late to contact your township or borough to tell them how much the library means to you.   Thanks to hundreds of you who have been signing funding petitions at the Front Desk. Here is citizenship at work - supporting strong funding for a library which serves everyone and makes this community a much better place to live.

Thanks, one and all, and have a great summer!

 --Linda Beck, Director

How would this sign look outside your library?

The fact is that the library faces huge budget issues because the school district will no longer fund library operations after 2012.

There is a proposal on the table for your township supervisors and borough council members to increase the millage for the library - from .165 to .33. The library tax would go from $10 to $20, on average, depending on your assessment.

This proposal was made by Douglas Gifford, chair of the Lower Salford Supervisors, because, as it puts it, "it is the right thing to do," and this is a wise investment in our community.

What can YOU do?

Talk to your township or borough. Let your voice be heard. Tell them you support additional funding for library services. Tell them you want the library open 65 hours a week, not 15.

Click on a link below for contact information, or attend a meeting. Meetings are held as follows:

Franconia Twp.                     3rd Monday, 7 pm

Lower Salford Twp.               1st Wednesday, 7 pm

Salford Twp.                         3rd Wednesday, 7:30 pm

Souderton Boro                     1st Monday, 7:30 pm

Telford Boro                          1st Monday, 7:30 pm

Upper Salford Twp.                2nd Tuesday, 7:30 pm

This series -- The Hunger Games (2008), Catching Fire (2009), Mockingjay (2010) contains mythic themes.  Can the young people caught up in the control of an omniscient government find ways to overcome that control?  Can they remain true to themselves in the face of demands of the media coverage?  Join us as we discuss the characters and events of these novels.  [Please note: we will discuss all three novels, but we will try to discuss them sequentially, so that participants can leave the discussion if they haven't finished the series.]

Coming soon:

Wednesday, July 18, 7-8 pm

Room, by Emma Donoghue, 2010
