Summertime - time for some fun!

Kids came to the summer kickoff for Dream Big! Read! and signed up for lots of summer reading and programs - almost 400 kids so far.

The IVPL Book Cart Drill Team started the summer in grand fashion by marching and maneuvering and waving in Souderton's 125th Anniversary Parade.

One-String Willie, one of my favorite performers, will be here Frid Jul 13, 7:30 pm, for a diddley-bow performance - followed by David Williams on cigar-box guitar. Here is music as you've never heard it before.

Hold on to Thurs Aug 16 for the Brain Quest caravan crossing the country and stopping at the library.

Our summer fundraiser, Brews for Books, will be Sat July 28, evening.

Have a splendid Fourth and a great July.

"Public libraries are as valuable as ever."   Read more of his comments here:
Gather 'Round, Let's Talk Taxes

(The library's Funding Committee recommends changing the "millage" for our supporting municipalities - in light of losing $440,000 annually from the SASD.)

What is a "mill" anyway?

   Well, it's not a million.

Raising "the millage" from .165 to .33 means about $10 per person, per year.

That is the increase the library needs.

   $10.

For some of you, your tax increase might be even less, as Souderton and Telford residents pay an average of $6.80 to the library per year.

Your friends in Upper Dublin pay $30 per year for their libraries; in Horsham, it's $42; in King of Prussia, $63.   Friends in NJ reported paying $107 per resident per year for library taxes.

Yet we think we can "get by" with $10 per person per year.

     We can't.

If you want a library filled with new books, providing programs for kids and adults of all ages, staffed by knowledgeable librarians, open seven days a week - that takes more than $10 per year.

     Think about it.

You can be 2 or 92, rich or poor, computer-savvy or clueless. The library will help you find a job, email your grandkids, find a great novel, solve your garden pests problem, teach you how to wallpaper your house, show you great recipes for your new grill, introduce you to new friends through a book group, entertain you at Second Fridays or film group, and inspire you and your kids to be all they can be.   What's your choice?

Marvelous Monarchs Butterfly Program
Wednesday, July 25, 7 pm

Learn about Monarch Butterflies in this presentation by Dave and Audrey Harding, members of Monarch Watch, an educational outreach program sponsored by the University Of Kansas.

The Hardings have been involved in the monarch tagging program, a research program that helps biologists track the monarchs in their migration to Mexico and monitor their population, since 2003.  In addition to showing live monarch butterflies and caterpillars, this presentation will include footage of the Hardings' visit to the monarch sanctuaries in Central Mexico, where they saw firsthand millions of monarchs filling the air with their flashing wings.  Adults and children of all ages are invited to attend.
