Director's Corner
Aaahhh, the Dog Days of August!
Where did THAT expression come from?
"Dog days" means "the hottest period of the year" and it dates from ancient Egypt, the time of year when Sirius, the Dog Star, rose in the heavens and, incidentally, the Nile flooded its banks.
Such tidbits of information can be found throughout the library. I found this one in a favorite reference book of mine, The Oxford Dictionary of Phrase and Fable.
Kids, teens, parents, and adults throughout the Indian Valley have been reading THOUSANDS of books this summer. It's great to see so many people reading. Be sure to send notes about your favorite books to the summer-reading blog. --Linda Beck, Director
