On your next visit to the library, take a look at the Butterfly Garden habitat that volunteers planted at the library on September 11. Neal Frederick (who is a landscape detailer and has his own firm, Yardscapes), and Debbie Radvany (a Montgomery County Master Gardener), organized and designed this butterfly garden. Mike Bideau, a Junior at Souderton Area High School, may do an Eagle Scout project related to planning and overseeing further work relating to the butterfly garden. The goal of this project was to create habitat for both butterflies and caterpillars, in an all-native habitat. Plants and materials for this project were donated by Behmerwald Nursery (Schwenksville), Clearview Nursery (Souderton), The Home Depot (Souderton), Lund
Brothers Nursery (Hatfield), and The Mulch Barn (Souderton). A sign has been donated by LetterCo Inc. Butterflies, moths, and bees arrived immediately.

Director's Corner
Last month I asked if anyone had any "Bests" to report from the strange winter of 2012. Sorry to say, this did not elicit tons of responses. Did everyone have an awful winter? Are readers shy? Is everyone looking to summer instead of contemplating a season gone by? Click here to read more!

State Aid Funding Means... Some Important Changes When PA's budget was finalized this fall, state aid to public libraries dropped 20%. With the economy down, everyone trying to save money, and thousands looking for jobs, it is not the time to be cutting back on services people need the most. IVPL will be making some changes to adjust to this new budget, beginning in January: 1. Overdue fines for adult materials will go from 10 cents/day to 15 cents/day. The maximum will be $8 per day. Fines for overdue children's books stay at 5 cents/day. If you return all your books on time, no penalty. 2. We will lose access to many important online databases: Learning Express, Heritage Quest, and Recorded Books downloadable audio. You can still download audiobooks from Overdrive through our website. 3. IVPL can no longer absorb the cost of all interlibrary loans. The state's interlibrary loan code does not require us to handle interlibrary loans for people who live outside our service area, and, beginning in January, the Ref Desk will send out-of-area residents back to their home libraries for interlibrary loans. Or, you may pay a $5 handling fee. 4. Know that neighboring libraries have cut hours. The Perkasie library is closing every Thursday and Friday. The good news is that IVPL hopes to weather the storm of budget cuts. To date, there are no plans to cut hours at IVPL. 5. Feeling helpful? You can now go to the PayPal donate button near the top left of each page of our website, click, and make a donation. Or, we're happy to accept your contributions at any time at the library. Many thanks! |
